Hello Guys and Girls! My name's Barry Britain! What has been happening in the UK this last two weeks, or fortnight as we Brits like to call it? Well, here is my summary, a selection of unimportant bits of news.

Music: The top twenty singles here include two from Lady Gaga and two from Jennifer Lopez. My fav (short for favourite-UK or favorite-USA) is Ms Lopez’s “On the Floor”, which features Pitbull. He, by the way, is number one with “Give Me Everything”. Adele is down to 20 with “Someone Like You” and  34 with “Make You Feel My Love” - this one has been in the charts for a fantastic 61 weeks! “Make You Feel My Love” is written by Bob Dylan, but Adele’s version is terrific.

Weather: Amazingly here in Norfolk, on the east coast of England, we have been given a drought notice, as we have had the lowest rainfall for the last 100 years this year. I will help to preserve water by drinking more whisky, I am happy to do my bit to help.

Sport: Wayne Rooney has had hair “from some part of his body” transplanted onto his head. I don't want to know which part! Wayne is a really good footballer who plays for Manchester United. The unkind papers are reporting that his hair was the least of the problems with his appearance. Who wants to be famous?

Politics: In the UK we are governed by a coalition between two parties as our voters did not vote in large enough numbers for any one party. The two parties are the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. After one year some cracks are beginning to appear in their relationship. The Leader is David Cameron, one of many millionaires in the top cabinet of ministers.

Where is the rain?

Nice to meet you all! I'll try and send you a letter from the UK every week! Any questions about my lovely country?

Very unusual to have a drought in the UK, Norfolk is one of the driest counties in the UK, but this year is exceptionally dry.

The coalition is working on reducing the UK debt. One of the biggest costs is our NHS, the National Health Service. Other costly areas are defence and education. There are no quick fixes only time will tell.

time will tell: I cannot tell the future, but I will see the results in the future.

A great letter! Thanks Barry. I can't believe you have a drought in the UK. That must be unusual?

Why do you think the coalition in the government not working? I like the idiom - cracks are beginning to appear - can anyone tell me what this means?

drought: a period of dry weather that can damage crops

coalition: an alliance, or agreement to work together, between 2 or more separate groups or parties
