Rain!

Whether you love it or hate it, rain is a part of our daily life! Let's take a look at some words we use to describe the rain!

  • downpour - heavy rain falling continuously.
  • drizzle - fine, gentle rain.
  • hail - small pellets of ice falling like rain.
  • pour - heavy or hard rain.
  • spit - scattered drops of rain.

We also have some idioms that we can use when we talk about rain.

  • Heavens have opened - It has suddenly started to rain heavily.
  • Raining cats and dogs - It's raining very hard.

There are 2 popular nursery rhymes about the rain. We might sing these to young children if we are stuck indoors because of the heavy rain!

It's raining; it's pouring.

The old man is snoring.

He went to bed and bumped his head,

And he couldn't get up in the morning.

Rain rain go away.

Come again another day.

Have you heard these nursery rhymes before?

What kind of rain do you prefer?

Do you enjoy going out in the rain?

No, I have never heard those nursery rhymes but it seems nice.  It not really bother me the kind of rain. The rain not bother me for going out but I prefer to stay home and it is nice to watch the rain falling sitting under the porch.  I don't think that my country have a lot of rain maybe sometime.  In summer I like to sit on the porch and listen to the rain but usually I can do more cleaning in the house or learning English online.

It's nice to watch the rain in the summer. The porch sounds perfect for that. I also like watching thunderstorms - as long as I am quite far away. It's really good to just sleep if it's raining!

I am not enough brave to sit on the porch to watch thunderstorms  but sleeping seems a good idea.  :)

I forget to tell that today, it is Monday and it is raining here.  We will  probably have some rain for a few days because of the hurricane Sandy.

Stay safe Coco. There's a lot of coverage on the news here and it looks serious!

Thank you Teacher.   Usually, we only have the tail of the hurricanes coming from USA here,  means rain and wind.  But it seems very bad in some places and it makes me shiver to think about all those people over there.

I have never heard these nursery rhymes before, but I think that I've ever heard other nursery rhymes about rain in Thai language.

I really hate all kinds of rain. Downpour always be the troublemaker, it makes people can't go anywhere easily, cause heavy traffic jam as well as flood. Drizzle is distinctly better than downpour nevertheless I also hate it because it's one of the reasons for my sickness :(

There's a lot of rain in my country especially in southern Thailand, where is my hometown and I'm now living in. I never feel happy to go out in the rain. When It's rain, I usually stay at my place and sleep.

However, even if I hate rain, but there is a thing about rain that I love, it is 'Love Rain', my favorite korean series on TV. :D

Can you give us a small example of the nursery rhyme about rain in Thailand?

I remember the rain in Thailand. I used to have to drive my motorbike in the rain and through floods. I didn't like it at all either. It's very easy to get sick after being caught in the rain!

Is Rain a Korean pop star? I remember my students talking about him!

I have never herad these nursery rhymes before,,He cleans the air and the nature. A rainy day can be very creative. We have time doing things like reading a good book or playing guitar or something else. In my country we have rain and somethimes big thunderstorm. I like watching the lightning and last summer I tried taking a picture form the dangrouse looking  atmosphere. It is very  difficult to catch a lightning at the right monnent. We have also a lot of hail her which is a big problem for the farmer and all the beautiful flowers in the garden. The town Salzburg is famous for his drizzle. Have you ever heard of it ? It rainy very often there more than in my town.

We have also pur - really heavy rain in the mountains and this is dangerous. If the water comes down from the mountain with rocks and wood it destroys villages and fields.

When rain drops knocking on my window and I'm at home, I like  listen to music or reading a book and drinking a good coup of tea

This is my favourite song on a rainy day :-)

It does feel fresh after the rain. He cleans the air and the nature. I like this phrase. :)

I have never been able to take a good photo of the thunderstorm. I think you need a special camera that takes many pictures in a row! I didn't know that Salzburg was famous for drizzle. In England the city of Manchester is famous for rain. They seem to get more than anywhere else.

Reading a book and drinking a nice cup of tea sounds like a good way to wait for the rain to finish.

Thank you for sharing your favourite song. It's very nice. :)

I love this song very much Gentraud Muller, :) thanks for sharing...I've been listening alot of times...

no.. i don't like using umbrella or wear a rain coat..  and yet , still get wet.  not mention the traffic and the flood caused by.

This statement reminded me of the rain in Thailand. I remember putting on my rain jacket, getting stuck in traffic and usually getting soaking wet despite my best efforts to stay dry. :(

Hibernation is a good idea. I'm going now. I'll be back in May!

Nice song. :) You should definitely go and dance in the rain to this!
