I think you understand the video very well. Do you know the adjective materialistic? People that are materialistic are only interested in material possessions, such as brand names clothes, jewellery, cars and houses - as you rightly said.

 

This video was released more than 25 years ago. The 1980s is remembered as a decade of greed and excess. A lot of people were very wealthy and lived the high life.

Do you think society has become more materialistic in the last 25 years?

I think you are very right about the media creating a materialistic society! Many people are influenced by the media, especially young people. I try to buy just what I need too, but it's very easy to be swayed by friends, TV adverts or even people on the Internet! Are there any big brands that you like?

How about you is used for more personal questions - about feelings. What about you is used for more general questions. You were right to use What about you in this example.

I like some brands - Acer, Nokia, Peugeot and Adidas for example - because I have had good experiences with their products. I would consider any brand though, if the quality is good and the price is right!

This is the first time I listen to this song.

It reflects rightly the current situation - the world is gradually materialized. Many people want to live in a sumptuous life, they are willing to do anything to be rich, to have power, regardless of the feeling and sufferings of others. They believe that have money, have right and have all. However after all are they happy? Specifically in this song, no money no love!

I saw many cases that a girl accepts to marry the man whose age is equal her father's, just because of money. Many girls keep the love with boys just because the boys give them money and they will stay away from the boys who don't support for them like the lyrics of this video said "If they don't give me proper credit, I just walk a way".

However in our life there are also many good people, they try to make this world more beautiful!

I agree with you. It is better to have our own income. Sometimes, finance causes many problems in the families even divorce.
