In England we have a funny tradition for the first day of each month.

  • First we say "Pinch, punch, it's the first of the month!"
  • Then we give somebody a small pinch and a light punch on the arm.
  • We can do this on first day of every month.

If we follow this by saying white rabbit it means the receiver of the pinch punch can't return the saying and pinch punch us back!

This is a funny little tradition usually only done by kids or younger people. I remember that sometimes the punch from my school friends was a little more painful than it should have been, but boys will be boys!

White rabbit!

Do you have any little traditions for the first day of the month?

What are they?

Hehe, if in Vietnam we had this tradition, maybe today I would be pinched and punched many times. :)

Teacher, what does boys will be boys mean?

I can say "white rabbit" before saying "pinch, punch, it's the first day of month", right? ^^

Why if we say "white rabbit" the reciever can not return the saying Pinch, Punch. Maybe the white rabbit is so lucky. ^^

Boys will be boys - this popular saying means that we must expect boys to fight, play around, hurt each other, be noisy and be irresponsible. It's just what young boys do!

You can only say white rabbit after you have pinched and punched someone! Then they can't get you back. I don't think you can say it first. The rabbit is a lucky animal in English culture. Some people carry around a rabbit's foot for good luck! Not such good luck for the poor rabbit though! :(

Thanks for your explaining ^^

:( How woeful for those rabbits!

yeah that is true. Man uses everything for his needs.

Pinch, punch, it's the first of the month!  Nice idea to use with my students on the first day of each month. :D Hope no fight will follow there, :D :D no worries everything under control.

Don't punch too hard and you'll be fine Saimir!

speaking of punching, reminds me of one of 'Friends' episodes : the one with the girl who hits Joey

and speaking of punch in the school..

Hehe. The Internet is a dark and scary place!

Friends is awesome. That girl is quite scary though. Thank you! :)

you're welcome.  thank you, Teacher Jamie.

No, I don't think we have a little tradition for the first day of the month.
